第五帖 若紫 わかむらさき
光源氏 十八歳

春の野のうらわか草に親しみて
いとおほどかに恋もなりぬる
病に悩まされていた光源氏は、治療のために北山を訪れ、思いを寄せる藤壺によく似た少女若紫(わかむらさき)を垣間見る。若紫が藤壺の姪であることを知った源氏は、若紫の祖母の尼君に結婚を前提に若紫の後見を申し出るが、その幼さゆえに断られる。
正妻の葵の上(あおいのうえ)の冷たい態度に満足しない源氏は、しきりに北山に文を送った。またこのころ、源氏は病のために里帰りしていた藤壺と再会する。その後、藤壺は光源氏の子を宿してしまう。
北山では、若紫の祖母の尼君が他界し、父兵部卿宮(ひょうぶきょうのみや)が若紫を引き取りに来ることになっていた。それを知った源氏は、先んじて若紫をひそかに二条院へと連れ去ってしまう。源氏は若紫を大切に養育し、若紫との交流を心の慰めとするのだった。
