薫 十四~二十歳
匂宮 十五~二一歳
春の日の光の名残花ぞのに
匂ひ薫ると おもほゆるかな
光源氏亡き後、それに代わる人物はいないというものの、帝の第三皇子で源氏の孫にあたる匂宮(におうのみや)と源氏と女三の宮の間に産まれた(実際の父は柏木である)薫が、世間の評判を二分していた。
夕霧は権勢を誇る右大臣となっていた。長女を東宮に入内させているが、他の姫君たちの縁組も気にかけている。
薫は周囲から愛され、官位も驚くほど早く昇進しているが、自分の出生に疑念を抱き、心を悩ませている。
薫には生まれつきかぐわしい香が備わっていた。匂宮はそんな薫に対抗して、すぐれた薫香をたきしめることを欠かさない。二人は互いに好敵手と認める親友であった。
世間は二人を「匂う兵部卿、薫る中将」と評し、娘をもつ貴族はみな婿に迎えたいと願うのだった。
