姫達は常(とこ)乙女(おとめ)にて春ごとに
花あらそひをくり返せかし
関白太政大臣であった髭黒(ひげくろ)が突然亡くなった後、玉鬘(たまかずら)は残された三男二女の将来に頭を悩ませていた。
姉の姫君に求婚する者は帝や冷泉院(れいぜいいん)をはじめ数多くいたが、ことに夕霧(ゆうぎり)の息子蔵人少将(くろうどのしょうしょう)は熱心だった。玉鬘は、かつて冷泉院の意にそむいて髭黒と結婚してしまったうしろめたさもあり、息子たちの反対を押し切って、冷泉院に姉の姫君を嫁がせた。蔵人少将の悲嘆はひととおりでなかった。帝からも不興をかうことになったため、玉鬘は妹の姫君を帝に入内させた。姉の姫君は冷泉院の寵愛を受け、女児に続いて男児を出産するが、周囲の嫉妬が激しくなり、自邸に下がりがちだった。
玉鬘は思うようにならない世の中に嘆息するのであった。
