しかしそこに老婆の妹が現れるという予期せぬ事態が起き、結果的にラスコーリニコフはこの妹も殺してしまいます。
社会問題に対する不満や恨みなどが反映され、罪の意識や正義、責任などの考察を含んだこの作品は、現代の日本にも通じるところがあるのではないでしょうか。

フョードル・ミハイロヴィッチ・ドストエフスキー
1821年11月11日、モスクワの貧民救済病院で、医師ミハイルと裕福な家庭で育ったマリアとの間に次男として誕生。
1838年に、サンクトペテルブルク陸軍中央工兵学校に入学し、卒業後に工兵隊製図局に勤務するも、1年ほどで退職して作家の道に進む。1846年に発表した処女作『貧しき人々』が評価され、作家デビューを果たす。その後、社会主義思想のサークルメンバーになったことで逮捕され死刑判決を受けるが、皇帝ニコライ1世の特赦により、シベリア流刑へ減刑される。この時の体験が、『死の家の記録』や『白痴』に反映されている。5年に渡る服役の後、軍隊での勤務を経て1858年にペテルブルクに帰還。この間に、キリスト教的人道主義者へと思想が変化し、その後『罪と罰』を発表。晩年に発表された『カラマーゾフの兄弟』は、ドストエフスキーの集大成的作品とされている。
