二郎は大阪に着くとすぐに、母方の遠縁にあたる岡田の家を訪れた。それは一週間前に友人の三沢と大阪で落ち合う約束をしており、たがいに指定すべき場所をもたなかったので、三沢には岡田の氏名と住所を伝えたのである。
だが、予定通りの時日を費やして二郎が岡田の家を訪れた時、三沢が訪れた形跡はなかった。二郎が岡田の家に泊まった翌日、三沢からの葉書が届いた。一両日遅れるというのである。二郎が岡田の家に逗留していると再度手紙があり、三沢は胃腸を悪くして入院していたのだという。
二郎は三沢を見舞うために病院に通うようになる。病院で孤独な日々を送る三沢は二郎の来訪を喜んだ。そのうちに三沢とある女の話題で盛り上がるようになる。それは、おそらくは同じ病院に入院しているらしい女性であった。二郎もその女のことが気になり、心惹かれるようになるのだが……

夏目漱石(なつめ・そうせき)
日本の小説家、評論家、英文学者。森鴎外と並ぶ明治・大正時代の文豪である。1867年(慶応3)江戸牛込馬場下横町(現在の東京都新宿区喜久井町)に生まれる。本名は夏目金之助。東京帝国大学英文科卒業後、東京高等師範学校、松山中学、熊本第五高等学校などの教師生活を経て、1900年、イギリスに留学。帰国後、第一高等学校、東京帝国大学の講師を務める。1905年、処女作『吾輩は猫である』を発表。翌年『坊っちゃん』『草枕』を発表。1907年、教職を辞し、朝日新聞社に入社。以後、朝日新聞に『虞美人草』『三四郎』『それから』『門』『彼岸過迄』『行人』『こころ』『道草』などを連載するが、1916年(大正5)12月9日、『明暗』の連載途中に胃潰瘍で永眠。享年50歳。
