Publisher's summary
Only one person can help crack this case—but he’s also the prime suspect.
DC Sophie Jones was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Viciously bludgeoned one night in a dark alley, she is left fighting for her life in hospital, leaving no clues as to why she was there or what might have motivated the attack.
For Detective Karen Hart, fiercely protective of her young protégée, this is already deeply personal: an attack on Sophie is an attack on the whole team. When a car workshop near the crime scene is linked to local mobster Quentin Chapman, the man Hart has spent years trying to bring down, it’s hard not to jump to the most obvious conclusion.
But Chapman not only denies any knowledge of the incident—he asks for Karen’s help. Someone is killing his associates, and he fears he might be next. With little else to go on, Hart has no choice but to rely on her sworn enemy and his underworld connections for valuable information. Can she trust Chapman to tell her the truth—or will this shady collaboration be the last case of her career?
Critic reviews
“The eighth novel in author D. S. Butler's 'Detective Karen Hart' series…is masterfully narrated by Henrietta Meire and will have a particular attraction to dedicated mystery buffs. Offering a compelling 'theatre of mind' experience…a highly recommended pick.”—Midwest Book Review

Story
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

Story
It was 1970 in a defeated Rhode Island fishing town. Vietnam and Nixon dominated the national news. Both the near and distant future looked bleak. But they were five inseparable high school friends with something incredible in common: an unwavering resolve to look after each other no matter what hell life threw at them. And they were on a mission. The plan was simple: Go off the grid before they turned 18 to avoid the draft. They’d sell some grass, stack some cash, then head west and start a commune. What could possibly go wrong?

Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

That is, until she finds the warning: It’s time to pay for your crime. The body belongs to a former teacher, Oliver Fox, who vanished from the village thirty years earlier. Hart’s instincts tell her there is something untoward about this rural Lincolnshire community—especially when she uncovers evidence suggesting that, although Fox was a victim, he certainly wasn’t innocent.

Good Story
The author does a good job with DC Karen Hart and her team. This time, her over eager trainee took a risk that got her seriously injured, and no one knew what she was working on and why she was in such a precarious place.

Ok
The narration is problematic, but it is not so bad I could not finish it. As long as it was free from Kindle Unlimited I could listen to it. if I had paid for it I would have gotten my money back. I don't like that the author continues to write Sophie in escapades because in a real police squad she would not still be doing anything other than research and anything to do in the office. She does not do the field things properly. She says and does the wrong thing far too often so she would not have as many chances as she gets in these books. I was sorry she was hurt but she was not doing things the right way.

Good Addition to the Series
I forgot how slow paced this series was. It was soothing and full of details. Although I found it hard to believe that a seasoned gangster would show fear to a cop. Other than that, this was a good addition to the series.
