Publisher's summary

The first in a vivid and charming crime series set in the Louisiana bayou, introducing the hilariously uncensored amateur sleuth Glory Broussard. Perfect for fans of Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club.

It’s a hot and sticky Sunday in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Glory has settled into her usual after-church routine, meeting gamblers at the local coffee shop, where she works as a small-time bookie. Sitting at her corner table, Glory hears that her best friend—a nun beloved by the community—has been found dead in her apartment.

When the police declare the mysterious death a suicide, Glory is convinced that there must be more to the story and, with her reluctant daughter, with troubles of her own, in tow, launches a shadow investigation in a town of oil tycoons, church gossips, and a rumored voodoo priestess.

As a Black woman of a certain age who grew up in a segregated Louisiana, Glory is used to being minimized and overlooked. But she’s determined to make her presence known as the case leads her deep into a web of intrigue she never realized Lafayette could harbor. Danielle Arcenaux’s riveting debut brings for an unforgettable character that will charm and delight crime fans everywhere and leave them hungry for her next adventure.

Lovely flavor, but a lot of filler

“The weather around Constance shifted like a hailstorm on a sunny day.”
I love it when writing is so vivid you can feel the ache in a character’s bones and picture each side eye.

“Black does eventually crack.”
Glory and the story reminded me of Steel Magnolias, only with even more flavor. The mystery is almost secondary to the interweaving personal stories. This was captivating and occasionally deep without being too dark or preachy.

“He was white the way a lot of people in Louisiana were white:
with a drop of something wicked from generations ago.”
There are a number of detours into things like the relationship woes of Glory’s daughter Delphine or Glory’s troubles with the town’s inspector. While they provided some misdirects for the central mystery,
I also found them to run a bit longer than necessary.

“How do you say ‘girl, shut up!’ with your eyes?”
I would have preferred instead if the story focused more on Glory and perhaps bumped up the humor. But, needs must for first books in a series. This was free of F bombs and sex, and can claim the ‘cozy’ label, even if there were some mid-level cuss words like the B word, or religious exclamations like JC.
I expect the series to improve and look forward to Glory finding her investigative grove.

What a hit!

I can't wait to read the next Glory Brossaurd mystery!

The characters were exciting & entertaining, all of whom I enjoyed from the get-go. Glory is a likeable character who made me giggle and someone I wish I could truly meet.

I really enjoyed the plot & appreciated how the storyline moved at a decent pace. Not once did I skip ahead or lose interest.

The narrator, Bahni Turpin, is incredible. She brought the characters to life & elevated the book entirely. She made me glad I listened instead of reading it myself.

I would highly recommend Glory Be amd encourage you to look out for the next book coming Fall 2024!

Good mystery, GREAT narrator!

Audible brought this book to my attention and Bahni Turpin as narrator sold it to me. Glory B. is a “woman of a certain age” and all that comes with that “certain age.” She’s sassy and clever and she has good taste! This book ended with a “teaser” from the next Glory B. adventure coming later this year. I’m looking forward to it and will be sure to have a credit available when it “drops.”

Easy listening mystery

I liked that it was set in the South, southern towns, customs and culture. Tasteful mystery, easy to listen to as you fall asleep.

Hilarious cozy mystery

Miss Glory cracked me up from start to finish. We all know someone like her. I’m looking forward to her sleuthing and fussing at people for years to come! And, of course, Ms. Bahni Turpin brings her to life terrifically!

Authentic

I absolutely loved this book but characters are so authentic. I felt like I knew each one of them. So funny and sometimes a little sad. It felt like real life. I'll definitely check out the series.
