Siamo nel 1805 e la Russia è in guerra con la Francia di Napoleone. In questa prima parte del primo libro Tolstoj introduce i protagonisti di tutto il romanzo: Pierre, Andrej, Natasha e molti altri.
A Pietroburgo Anna Pavlovna Sherer tiene un ricevimento con molti invitati. Qui si incontrano Pierre, che fa la sua prima entrata in "società" dopo un lungo soggiorno all'estero, il principe Vassilj, sua figlia Helène, e si discute molto di vicende politiche e militari, ma anche di questioni famigliari e dinastiche. Il principe Andrej, sposato con Liza, che aspetta un bambino, annuncia che vuole partecipare alla guerra contro Napoleone, il principe Vassilj intende invece ammogliare il figlio Anatole alla sorella di Andrej, Marja.
La famiglia Rostov organizza un banchetto e tutti sono impressionati dalla bellezza e dalla grazia di Natasha, figlia del conte Rostov. Il figlio Nicolaj decide di unirsi agli ussari e dichiara il proprio amore a Sonja, cugina di Natasha, la quale d'altro canto riceve la promessa di matrimonio da Boris. Pierre, dopo le baldorie fatte con Anatole a Pietroburgo, si reca a Mosca per assistere alla morte del padre, il vecchio conte Bezuchov che gli lascia in eredità uno dei più grandi patrimoni di tutta la Russia. Nel frattempo il principe Andrej si prepara a partire dalla casa paterna per la guerra, lasciando nella tristezza e nel dolore la moglie Liza, la sorella Marja e il padre.
