Story
Within each of us is a spiritual longing that prompts us to unite with something greater than ourselves, to awaken to our unity with all of life. Yet, no matter the spiritual path we choose, we inevitably encounter our own shadow, those unconscious aspects of ourselves that we suppress or deny, or the shadows of our teachers and their secret desires about money, sex, and power. Meeting the shadow can derail the journey, but, according to Connie Zweig, Ph.D., we can learn to recover from loss of faith and move from spiritual naivete to spiritual maturity.

Story
Marion Woodman believes that centuries of “patriarchal thinking” have stripped the soul from our inner and outer lives and placed the world in grave danger. In talks, workshops, and BodySoul Rhythms intensives in Canada, the United States, and Europe, she has urged us to engage with the unconscious energy that erupts beneath the surface of our best intentions, sending us where we may not want to go. In this lecture and through case studies, dreams, and myths, the Jungian analyst explores the hidden causes of compulsion in the lives of men and women.

Story
Within this book lies the key to unlocking that door that holds the dark shadows hostage. As you walk deep into the shadows, you’ll be able to physically grab hold of the bad energy that causes stress, anxiety, depression, fear, and pain, and release it out of the closet of darkness. Around the corridor is the shadows consciousness where you’ll face the challenges that you gave up on years ago, where all those decisions have shaped you into the person you are today. Downstairs is where you look darkness in the face; and scare fear away.

An affair: It can rob a couple of their relationship, their happiness, their very identity. And yet this extremely common human experience is so poorly understood. Adultery has existed since marriage was invented, and so, too, the prohibition against it - in fact it has a tenacity that marriage can only envy. Iconic couples' therapist and best-selling author of Mating in Captivity Esther Perel returns with a groundbreaking and provocative look at infidelity, arguing for a more nuanced and less judgmental conversation about our transgressions.

Publisher's summary
"One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light but by making the darkness conscious." (C. G. Jung)
Within each woman and man, the dim cavern of the unconscious holds our forbidden feelings, secret wishes, and creative urges. Over time, these "dark" forces take on a life of their own, forming an intuitively recognizable figure - the shadow. A recurring theme in literature and legend, the shadow is like an invisible twin, a stranger that is us yet is not us. When it acts out in the public domain, we witness our leaders, like hero-villains, fall from grace in scandal. Closer to home, we may feel overcome with rage, obsession, and shame or succumb to self-destructive lies, addiction, or depression. These appearances of the shadow introduce us to the Other, a powerful force that defies our efforts to tame and control it.
Steve Wolf, PhD, and Connie Zweig, PhD, innovators in the use of shadow-work in psychotherapy, have helped hundreds of clients in their encounters with the dark side. Seeing it - meeting the shadow - is a first step. Learning to live with it - romancing the shadow - is a lifelong challenge. It means reading the messages encoded in the events of daily life in such a way that we gain consciousness, substance, and soul. In fact, shadow-work is soul work.
With shadow-work, we cultivate a deeper self-knowledge and authenticity. When we identify family shadow patterns, we move toward cultivating family soul. When we untangle romantic projections, we begin to build the soul of a relationship. When we face descent at midlife and meet the underworld shadow, we reclaim the unlived life of the soul. And when we retrieve our lost vitality and creative fertility - the gold in the dark side - we nurture the hungry soul.

What does it really mean to be a grown-up in today's world? We assume that once we "get it together" with the right job, marry the right person, have children, and buy a home, all is settled and well. But adulthood presents varying levels of growth and is rarely the respite of stability we expected. Turbulent emotional shifts can take place anywhere between the ages of 35 and 70 when we question the choices we've made, realize our limitations, and feel stuck - commonly known as the "midlife crisis".

John Bradshaw is arguably the most accomplished and well-known leader alive today in the addictions field. He taught us about functional and dysfunctional families, showed us how shame could become toxic and poisonous to our core selves, and helped us understand and heal the wounded, vulnerable "inner child" conceived by, and thriving in, that environment. In Post-Romantic Stress Disorder (PRSD), Bradshaw gives readers a clear explanation of the difference between falling in love, lust, and true love.

Story
"Our shadow," teaches Robert Augustus Masters, "is our internal storehouse for the parts of us that we’ve disowned or rejected, or are otherwise keeping in the dark." Everyone has a shadow, but all too many of us are unaware of it. It holds the feelings and beliefs that we are most ashamed of or cannot accept about ourselves. For some, it may contain unacknowledged anger or grief. For others, pain or fear. Our shadow contains our unfaced conditioning. And the more unaware we are of our shadow, the more it influences and controls us.

Our “shadow” is the collection of negative or undesirable traits we keep hidden—the things we don't like about ourselves or are ashamed of, but it also includes our positive, untapped potential. The shadow is often a source of creative inspiration and greater self-acceptance. Befriending the shadow makes fear an ally and enables us to live more authentically. It also automatically improves our interpersonal relationships, because we are freed from the need to project our own negativity onto others, and we become more acutely aware when theirs is projected onto us.

Tsultrim Allione brings an 11th-century Tibetan woman's practice to the West for the first time with Feeding Your Demons, an accessible and effective approach for dealing with negative emotions, fears, illness, and self-defeating patterns. Allione - one of only a few female Buddhist leaders in this country and comparable in American religious life to Pema Chodron - bridges this ancient Eastern practice with today's Western psyche. She explains that if we fight our demons, they only grow stronger. But if we feed them, nurture them, we can free ourselves from the battle.

Debbie Ford explains that the dark side of our personality should not be hidden. By denying our dark side, we reject aspects of our true natures rather than giving ourselves the freedom to live authentically. Here she shows that it is possible to acknowledge and accept our so-called weaknesses, proving that these qualities may be hidden strengths. Full of illuminating stories and practical exercises, Debbie Ford shows us how to reconcile our darker impulses and find the gifts they offer.

Each of us has a dual nature: we are light (conscious) and dark (unconscious). The dark side of our personality - the “other,” the shadow side - is made up of what we think is our primitive, primal, negative impulses - our “existential kink.” Our existential kink also drives the dark or negative repeating patterns in our life: always choosing the abusive partner or boss, settling for less, thinking that we’re undeserving, not worthy. But it also is the source of our greatest power.

Not what I expected.
Romancing the Shadow, while well written and performed, was not helpful to me. It's focus is very specifically identifying and working through shadow as it appears in relationships: familial, dating, and committed relationships. The archetypes referred to are too textbook and limited. If you are looking to identify and work through shadow as it appears in your relationships with others, then this book may be helpful.
I, however, was looking for help to do shadow work within myself, bridging between soul and Self as the authors call it, but not in context of external relationships. This book did not have examples or discuss archetypes that were of use to me.

Great listen for seeing some patterns
Great listen for seeing some patterns of behavior in people around you and within yourself. Good length and well worth the cost of admission. I have listened to it 3 times, which is not typical for me, but I get this. I went through a divorce and found yoga to be my only rescue from drugs and alcohol. I never really understood the root of repeating patterns in relationships that I was doing all my life, Reading this helped me realize breathing and ching my thoughts to a different Glad to have this in my library to share :-)

Darth Vader would've appreciated this....
Very interesting. Will listen to more than thrice. Shines a light on a not so often spoken of subject.

Had to write this review
This is my first review after nearly 100 audibles. This book has incredibly fresh insights into our behavior, unconscious and conscious.
As a recovering victim of many such addictions, parental abuse, and other impactful developmental factors, this book clearly lays out causes, both direct and indirect of what causes us to act in what we commonly say as “out of character”, and experience a level of shame.
The truth is- we all have these moments, but like the author says, this “lighting of the candles” of the mind will help you romance your shadow and ultimately, bring your self identity and shadow identity closer in sync.

Required Reading
I have been through a lot of therapy in my time on earth but this 3-hour audio book is probably more illuminating than the hundreds spent in the chair.
I’ll be referencing this for the rest of my life as I continue to romance my shadow.
