Publisher's summary

When Ryne Burdette inherits his family's old hunting cabin deep in the Yukon wilderness, he wants to say no. Nothing much is left in that place except for unpleasant memories and the smoke of old burns. But after a tragic year, he sees a weekend trip to the cabin with his best friends as a way to recuperate and begin again. But there is something strange about these woods. As a winter storm moves in, the animals begin acting strangely, and the natural laws of the wilderness seem to fall apart. Then, the soft voices start whispering through the trees. Something is watching them. As the storm gets worse and the woods get darker, the three friends must dive into the darkest waters of the Burdette family lineage. Because the horrible truth is deep, resting in the shadowed places no one wants to look.

Contains mature themes.

Depressing and repetitive

I kept hoping this book would get better but it never did. The three main characters were living lives of emotional misery. The misery of their lives and several concepts/details were repeated over and over. There is a very dismal portrayal of the concept of Christianity or other positive faith traditions. There is no spark of hope or inspiration or positivity in this book. I usually like the horror genre but I can’t recommend this book.

Excellent Horror Story!

Very real, although obviously not (at least I hope not!!). Good and creepy-creepy. I thought the narrator was perfect for this piece. The hypnotic sound of his voice serves to draw you deeper and deeper into the whole horrible mess. And great job with the sound effects! Overall, this story was quite good, very well thought out. I think this writer has a great deal of potential….☺️

Just not good

This is the first audiobook I’ve ever quit listening to. Nothing about it was worth the time and effort it would take to finish.
Both the story and narrator were totally uninteresting

Distracting

Is this a translation from another language? It’s overly descriptive and uses lots of words to say very little. You lose the plot. It’s distracting and hard to follow. It could have been half this long. And it’s not poetic. Like a person using a thesaurus over and over

It was simply boring. It didn’t hold my interest.

Both the story and the narrator were hard to listen to and I eventually gave up trying.

Simply boring

Three grownups who think and behave as teenagers and the reader is supposed for some reason to be get interested and involved in their feelings. Boring people, overdone terrors.

Wow!

I am floored. This was a dark & emotional journey. I really enjoyed this book. The friendship, the sadness & loss and the dark family secret made for a very entertaining story. The ending got me. I was not expecting it at all. Definitely recommend.

Struggled to listen

Based on so many reviews, i thought this was going to be better. Did not like the characters (too testosterone driven), and the story dragged for me. I am a huge Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Shirley Jackson fan to name a few authors, and this book was more irratitng not scary for me. Worth the read, depends, people seem to love it or not. I am in the "not" catagory.

Narrator

Super annoying narrator. I wish I’d read the print version instead, as I think the annoying narration colored my review.

Slow start, but enjoyed!

Personally, this started off slow to me. About halfway through, I got into the story more and it picked up! The story itself was very unique. I loved the depth of the main characters and their friendship. The folklore was interesting! The woods were creepy. Family secrets unravel. Not sure what more you could ask for!

Would definitely recommend reading 😊
