Publisher's summary

Jo told him the phone call had been about a woman who wanted to have her husband declared dead. Smith thought for a moment and then said, 'Hmm. There must be a few million women in this country who feel like that. I take it her husband's been missing for a while and she's decided it's time to move on. In the absence of a body, which is always a nuisance, she wants Diver and Diver to confirm there's no proof he's alive. And I've told Jason a dozen times I'm not getting involved in anything matrimonial. I have enough trouble sorting out my own relationships.'

But on this occasion Smith has it wrong. The insurance company which will have to pay out a very substantial amount of money if Amanda Fitch obtains her certificate of presumed death has engaged Diver and Diver Associates to look into the disappearance of Gerald Fitch, more than five years ago now. As Jason Diver says, he has the very man for the job. All he has to do is to persuade that man to take it on.

Such fullness of thought!

Superb as always. Peter Grainger renders the setting with awe and respect. The characters are so authentic, I sometimes forget they are fictional, and that’s because each one is written with fullness of thought. Mr. Grainger seems to yearn for a world in which decency reigns. As do I.
Of course, Gildart Jackson of all performers is Audible’s most sublime. Highly recommend The Camera Man. I only wish Gerald had sent Smith the three paintings.

Grainger and Jackson are national treasures!

Does anyone else start to feel melancholy halfway through a DC Smith story because they know it will be over too soon?! The wit, the moral strength, the poise, the patience! The combination of author and reader are a match that I have found to be unequaled.

Yes l, this Smith is different than the DC working for Kings Lake and that means no real interaction with the squad. But that is to be expected from a character that has had an amazing arc revealed in patient moments over a period of stories. Grainger also writes a series that highlights the Kings Lake clan as well now.

Don’t miss this!

A fabulous narrator of a brilliant story

There will be some who have negative comments. I’m not one. This is a cleverly written story. Gildart Jackson is a triple AAA narrator. I have purchased all of this series simply because of his reading.
I have watched him reading children’s books on YouTube and he is the accomplished reader you would hope for.
My only complaint is that I can listen faster than Mr G can write. However at 75 years, I forget much. Chances are I’ll re-listen to this excellent story in 2 months and be delighted all over again.

Just about perfect

I have listened to the entire series by Peter Grainger and they are uniformly excellent. This latest entry is one of my favorites- just enough suspense combined with the dry, witty dialogue that characterizes this author’s work.
The reader is absolutely perfect for the role of DC. If you are looking for a literate detective series with plenty of humanity, this is it. If you are new to the series, starting at the beginning would be best but any one of these books is worthwhile.

Lovely story

The skullduggery is more muted in this book, but it’s a good story. It seems a bit slow, but I’d use the word ‘measured’. The thoughts and fussiness of DC are perfect as are his ruminations on nature. Only Gildart Jackson should read these books. He’s perfect.

Fabulous

This was another amazing DC investigation. I don’t know how the author does it- just brilliant! And Gildart Jackson is the best of the best! Peter, please keep writing, and Gildart, please keep reading!

As fantastic as all the rest.

So comforting to rejoin DC in all of his exploits. I am always sad when these books are finished

Underwhelming.

I’ve listened to the entire series and this was probably my least favorite. Just a lot of talking and not much of anything interesting happening.
