Publisher's summary

Everything you believe about how to lose weight is wrong. Weight gain and obesity are driven by hormones - in everyone - and only by understanding the effects of insulin and insulin resistance can we achieve lasting weight loss.

In this highly listenable and provocative book, Dr. Jason Fung sets out an original, robust theory of obesity that provides startling insights into proper nutrition. In addition to his five basic steps - a set of lifelong habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels - Dr. Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight - for good.

Excellent perspective on causes of obesity

I have read other diet and nutrition books in my past, but few if any was supported by so much science. Adding humor makes the science much more palatable.

As someone who likes statistics, I appreciated how the doctor made sure to distinguish the difference between correlation and causation even when he argues his points.

I also appreciate his preference to human studies vs. animal studies.

This lifestyle; diet, fasting stress control, is very similar to the Whole30 that I recently started. It takes the science of their plan even deeper.

Excellent read for anyone who has spent their life battling weight

It can be

redundant at some points, but that doesn't devalue the information. Stick with it and if you have been battling weight issues pay attention to what is being said, please. Not for the science, but for your own sanity along with your health. It is heart breaking to watch people struggle with this issue and society overall can be really stupid schmucks when it comes to weight issues.

I am almost 60, all my life I have been very blessed to have a metabolism that lets me eat what I want and as long I stay active, my weight stays at a healthy stable level. My oldest daughter was blessed with my genetics.

Flip the coin, my husband, youngest daughter and our son have all struggled all their lives to avoid weight gain.

They can and do watch what they eat, try to eat as clean as possible, try to get plenty of exercise but they still battle weight issues. All three have to watch everything they eat....they can't skip a day or two of exercises and it doesn't take much to send them into a spiral of "I'm just fat and there's no point in trying".

I have them listening to this book now. I want them to understand they aren't lazy, they are not slobs-----there is science behind the why and how of the body they own----- and they need to work to figure out what works for them, not jump to every fly by night diet junk science that is out there.

I want them to walk away understanding the message here......there is hope and they aren't bad people....they aren't lazy..sometimes IT IS their own body working against them.

This book explains, in an easy to understand way....why I can eat two slice of chocolate cake and not go up a pants size in a week....why my husband, daughter and son can eat a half slice of cake and see the scale jump.

Fascinating

I've been reading and experimenting with various eating protocols to figure out what works best for me in terms of performance, preventing weight gain, and general health and well being. There are so many different theories and this book really pulled everything together for me. It dispelled many myths with explanations and scientific backup, and it explained why certain eating part work for awhile but then stop. The reading was very clear but I didn't really like the voice- probably just a personal preference. The only downside with any audio book is there are references to charts and tables which you obviously can't see. I wish there was an option to buy the book and hear it at a reduced price.

It actually works! Inspite of the commercial title

Based on the title alone you might think that this is the millionth diet fad, that will work on the short term, but not longterm. However, this is not a fad. Dr. Fung explains in understandable but very scientific detail what actually causes obesity (not calories, not fat). And then he continues explaining the solution, and how you can apply that to your own life.
He also explains why every diet is doomed to fail - and how that is not the obese person's fault!

I've also listened to several of his speeches and interviews - as well as to many others in the ancestral health community - and I'm very happily working on keeping my insuline low (the solution to obesity and insuline resistance). I've lost 27.5 kilos (60 lbs) in the last 6 months (and I didn't even do any sports or physical activities!). Admittedly, I found this solution during my own research before I listened to The Obesity Code, but Dr. Fung's book offers some deeper insights into our human fysiology that I had not heard before and find very helpful.
His tips on how to keep your insuline permanently low, for the rest of your life, are very helpful and practical, and very easy to understand and apply.

There is some repetition here and there, I'm guessing Dr. Fung is a bit of a teacher and knows the importance of repeating things. But sometimes it's a bit too much.

Narration is fine, I would have preferred Dr. Fung himself, who always speaks very passionately, but this narrator does a great job.

Highly recommend to anyone struggling with obesity, especially if you've already tried every diet on the planet and failed.

So understandable, but based on research

This book is very well written! I thought I would have to “drag” myself through it—expecting it to be boring. No! Informative, clear. In depth, but understandable. “Common sense”, but particularly insightful! Everyone should read this book, ESPECIALLY if you have ANY history of diabetes, obesity, or heart disease in your family history...yup, everyone.

Excellent overview of insulin hypothesis obesity

I appreciate the way research evidence was used to tie together the consistent themes among many different diets regarding how they influence insulin. However I found the frequent use of metaphors to degrade the scientific quality of the arguments, I would have preferred sticking to the science without inventing coal factory metaphors. I would also have appreciated more scientific backing for fasting as there was no mention of long term multi year intermittent fasting studies to see if they have the same long term failure rate of other diets.

a science based look at health and body weight

Where does The Obesity Code rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would rank this book in the top 5 of my entire audio book collection

What did you like best about this story?

This story stuck to facts and studies (both published and unreleased) and can pass the gut test of answering more questions than it creates.

What about Brian Nishii’s performance did you like?

The book is well read with good emphasis. It is more like listening to a TED talk than an audio book.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

a science based look at health, food, and body weight

Any additional comments?

This book was written by a Dr, and references valid scientific studies and facts about the human body and our known understanding of food, the human body, and how weight is determined.

Have you ever wondered why most diets work at first then not after about 6 months? Covered. Wonder what is good to eat and what is not? Covered. Wonder if you should be eating breakfast when you’re not hungry or feel bad about skipping it? Covered.

The last two chapters discuss method of managing body weight and foods to eat and avoid. I don’t know that I can follow fully the recommendations, but it certainly opens my eyes and helps cut through the contradicting claims being sold out there.
