This is the book the CIA does not want you to read. For the last 60 years, the CIA has maintained a formidable reputation in spite of its terrible record, never disclosing its blunders to the American public. It spun its own truth to the nation while reality lay buried in classified archives. Now, Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter Tim Weiner offers a stunning indictment of the CIA, a deeply flawed organization that has never deserved America's confidence.

Worshippers stream out of an Midwestern synagogue after sabbath services, unaware that only a hundred yards away, an expert marksman and avowed racist, antisemite and member of the Ku Klux Klan, patiently awaits, his hunting rifle at the ready. A riveting, cautionary tale rooted in history that continues to echo today, The Killer's Shadow is a terrifying and essential exploration of the criminal personality in the vile grip of extremism and what happens when rage-filled speech evolves into deadly action and hatred of the “other" is allowed full reign.

Jared Kushner was one of the most consequential presidential advisers in modern history. For the first time, he recounts what happened behind closed doors during the Trump presidency. Few White House advisors have had such an expansive portfolio or constant access to the president. From his office next to Trump, senior adviser Jared Kushner operated quietly behind the scenes, preferring to leave the turf wars and television sparring to others.

Story
John Douglas once again takes us fascinatingly behind the scenes, focusing his expertise on predatory crimes, primarily against women. With a deep sense of compassion for the victims and an uncanny understanding of the perpetrators, Douglas looks at the obsessions that lead to rape, stalking, and sexual murder through such cases as Ronnie Shelton, the serial rapist who terrorized Cleveland; and New York's notorious "Preppie Murder". But Douglas also looks at obsession on the other side of the moral spectrum: his own career-long obsession with hunting these predators.

In the number-one New York Times best seller Mindhunter, John Douglas, who headed the FBI's elite Investigative Support Unit, told the story of his brilliant and terrifying career tracking down some of the most heinous criminals in history. Now, in Journey into Darkness, Douglas profiles vicious serial killers, rapists, and child molesters. He is straightforward, blunt, often irreverent, and outspoken, but takes pains not to glorify any of these murderers.

Story
In 1978, CIA maverick Jack Platt and KGB agent Gennady Vasilenko were new arrivals on the Washington, D.C., intelligence scene, with Jack working out of the CIA's counterintelligence office and Gennady out of the Soviet Embassy. Both men were assigned to seduce the other into betraying his country in the final days of the Cold War, but instead the men ended up becoming the best of friends. Theirs is a friendship that never should have happened, and their story is chock full of treachery, darkly comic misunderstandings, bureaucratic inanity, and landmark intelligence breakthroughs.

Even-handed; an interesting history of the FBI
'This book seems even-handed; an interesting history of the FBI that covers its directors and significant cases (Waco, Abscam etc) to the present. It also covers FBI training and undercover operations. The narrator is particularly well suited for this title. This is my first book by the author and while it claims 'secrets' of the FBI -there are some- I think it mostly covers issues in depth and gives background not generally well known. I have not 'read' about the FBI before so much of the story is new or at least in depth compared to the news. I enjoyed it!

Entertaining
Ronald Kessler in The Secrets of the FBI provides a series of investigative chapters concerning the work of the FBI. The raid on Osama bin Laden, Marilyn Monroe’s death, the Vince Foster suicide, and other stories are here. While a very interesting read, this book contained no “secrets” that I didn’t already know or that had not been reported in the press earlier. However, each chapter contained insights into how the FBI works and interesting related details. The book takes a rather eclectic approach loosely connecting the various tales in the several chapters. If you are not familiar with the work of the FBI or have never read in this genre, this book might be one you would like to pick up. The reading of Michael Bybee is very good.

Solid narrator, but tough to follow the arc of where the author was going. Seemed like a lot of the material covered was from long ago newspaper clippings. Not a total waste of time, but certainly below average.
