Publisher's summary

Ashlock wakes in the courtyard of a demonic sect... as a tree. A tree that eats people.

An odd start to a new life. Almost as strange as the humans flying through the skies on flaming swords and challenging the heavens. After all, this is a world where humans could chase the goal of immortality through the art of cultivation.

But Ashlock is merely a sapling in a desolate courtyard, left alone with his thoughts and unable to speak to those passing him by.

Unless he does something about it...

Every day, he grows stronger as he cultivates and uses a suspicious daily sign-in system that grants him powerful skills, mutations, summons, and items, all in exchange for credits earned from eating flesh and watching the seasons pass by.

But his peaceful life and man-eating ways can only go unnoticed for so long. His Qi-rich bark makes him a target for many young masters. If that isn't bad enough, tensions in the demonic sect are at an all-time high with the Beast Tide festers on the horizon.

Ashlock's only option is to grow faster and stronger than any tree has ever done in the history of the nine realms—all while trying to avoid being turned into firewood.

Perfect

This was such an amazing book. I honestly can't complain about a single thing. The author did a fantastic job of taking an idea that seems like there would be very little story to support it and make it into something memorable. Very well done. I really can't wait for this series to continue.

A Demonic Tree

Love the concept. Appreciate the execution. I personally disliked some of the pacing of the story and some minor inconsistencies in how characters were narrated. Will keep coming back for more as long as the writer loves this project

Interesting twist on the genre

Interesting story, doesn’t get bogged down by numbers or reviewing stats too often. Performance was good, couple of reedits seemed off and voices didn’t always match for those edits.

clever world building.

As the reader or listener, you only get the story of the world with in the influential reach of the protagonist. There are little snippets of info about the wider world outside of the "reach". I love this about the story. It gives a great immersive quality to the story. Some story events you see coming and others are a complete surprise, since they didn't build up with in the reach.

The power system is based on cultivation with references to other potential power sources. Most of the characters use some form of this cultivation system. With this solid system, there is a potential for many more books. I can't wait for the audible release for the mext book on May 7.

What an amazing yet frustrating perspective

I glanced over this story more than a few times, not really interested in what seemed to be a boring story that would be about grass growing… and I was right except it wasn’t boring and it wasn’t grass growing but instead a flesh devouring tree that housed a human souls incompatible with its new tree body, outmatched in every way, destined to be slapped down by the heaven and destroyed by others greed, yet somehow persevering in its pursuit of power. I absolutely loved this story, and I’ve never read anything quite like it ever before.

I’m not a very big fan of cultivation stories, yet the angle this one took just baffled me and once I started reading- or rather listening in this case, I couldn’t stop. 21 hours of amazing storytelling, with the ending leaving me ravenous for more. The narrator did amazing, even if I didn’t quite like how some of the internal dialogue tended to switch to a young sounding child at times since it threw me off, but still amazing.
