Publisher's summary

Fibromyalgia is a condition that's often misunderstood by the general public and doctors alike. This book aims to dispel myths about fibromyalgia and offers practical strategies that can help anyone living with this condition manage it successfully and return to a fulfilling and enjoyable life.

Drawing on decades of experience in treating fibromyalgia, Mayo Clinic Guide to Fibromyalgia offers research-supported, practical strategies that can help anyone with fibromyalgia live their best life now. From personal stories of people living with fibromyalgia to the compassionate expertise of its medical editors, this book seeks to first connect with people who have fibromyalgia in a way that they may not have experienced from loved ones and even doctors. From there, listeners will learn about what fibromyalgia is - and isn't - and find solace in knowing that they're not alone in the challenges that they face.

The half of the book sets the foundation for the second half, which outlines practical strategies shown to be effective in managing fibromyalgia. The entire book comes together in the last part, where listeners will put everything they've learned into an actionable daily plan that they can start using right away.

This book is divided into four parts:

  • Part 1 defines fibromyalgia, describes what causes it, and lists the challenges it can pose
  • Part 2 outlines treatment options
  • Part 3 describes strategies for managing fibromyalgia
  • Part 4 outlines steps toward working with your health care team and family and creating a daily action plan for managing symptoms

Much needed info on a topic no-one talks about

I have fibro, and found this book to be very complete. I have had it 30 yrs. now and I found helpful info plus
New medical info I was not aware of.
I must say though, I think this book would be more helpful as a real book, for recurring review.
The narrator was good.

A Necessary Handbook for Fibromyalgia Patients

I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia many years ago. Much has evolved since then but my doctors weren’t necessarily up to speed. So, I have suffered a long time. This book has revealed to me research, medical help and practical advice that I have needed for a long time. The narration is well paced so I didn’t feel overwhelmed and there is guidance for a daily routine (with exercises) to help my days go better. I am happy to have found this practical and well researched source of information.

Good general info

This provided an overview of fibromyalgia and methods to treat it. Quite a bit of information was provided about medication and types of exercise etc.

Should have been an article

This has to have been the most redundant book I have ever read. It repeats the same advice over and over and over again, but doesn’t really elaborate on anything.

If you have never, ever read about stress relief, or researched pain relief (doubtful if you’re reading this book?!) then you might find something helpful here.

But seriously. Advice includes using a calendar to schedule your day, doing yoga, talking to medical professionals about antidepressants.....

Again, this could be the perfect book for you if you know nothing about stress and pain, but otherwise, this should have a been an article, not a full book.

The narrator has a lovely voice, but she puts me to sleep. Which, since sleep is recommended in this book, is probably the primary value I received from this purchase, I have to admit.
