Publisher's summary

Anna has two rules for the annual Pace family destination vacations: Tread lightly and survive. It isn’t easy when she’s the only one in the family who doesn’t quite fit in. Her twin brother, Benny, goes with the flow so much he’s practically dissolved, and her older sister, Nicole, is so used to everyone—including her blandly docile husband and two kids—falling in line that Anna often ends up in trouble for simply asking a question. Mom seizes every opportunity to question her life choices, and Dad, when not reminding everyone who paid for this vacation, just wants some peace and quiet.

The gorgeous, remote villa in tiny Monteperso seems like a perfect place to endure so much family togetherness—until things start going off the rails—the strange noises at night, the unsettling warnings from the local villagers, and the dark, violent past of the villa itself...

Jennifer Thorne skewers all-too-familiar family dynamics in this sly, wickedly funny vacation-Gothic. Beautifully unhinged and deeply satisfying, Diavola is a sharp twist on the classic haunted house story, exploring loneliness, belonging, and the seemingly inescapable bonds of family mythology.

(Warning: May invoke feelings of irritation, dread, and despair that come with large family gatherings.)

Witty, Original, VERY satisfying ending

I absolutely loved this! I'm new to this writer but will definitely follow her. White Lotus-esque family vacation from hell; very satisfying & original take on the gothic genre; and a BANGER of an ending. For anyone who's ever felt like the 'black sheep' of the family, the dynamics here might be uncomfortably familiar; that said, even when the author is skewering family politics there's still understanding and I think love. I don't think all great books should be adapted into limited series but this one DEFINITELY should be...

All around good

First off, I absolutely love Andi Arndt as a narrator! I have actually searched for books based solely on her being the narrator.
Ok on to the book..id definitely recommend reading this. I was pleasantly surprised that it did not end where these types of stories do. You know, vacation-is-over-and- so- is- the-story type. It was awesome to have that much more of the adventure!

Fun all the way through

Every character was well written and so believable. Anna’s family was exhausting without being cartoonishly evil, and I found myself trusting and rooting for Anna throughout the entire book. The performances by Andi Arndt are amazing!! Each character has a distinct and believable voice. Super fun read!!

A dash of family dread with a ghost on top.

This was a fantastic book! Though there are paranormal elements that kept me on the edge of my seat, the family of the main character made me want to scream for her! The helplessness she felt struck deep when reading this but ugh I had to finish to see what will happen! A GOOD READ INDEED!!

Pretty good until the lame ending.

The story and setting were good. Characters were alright. The ending was such a cop out. It built up to a really cool horror ending, but then the author decided to go with an unbelievable "girl power" one that was almost as bad as The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner.

The Devil

A story that makes you think twice about taking a trip to Italy. A good thing to remember when traveling anywhere, if the locals avoid a place like the plague, you should too. Obviously this is a fictional story, but I stand by that theory. The hotdog illustration from chapter 42 made me laugh. IYKYK

Great story and fantastic narration

Her family is just unbearable. Not a good one in the bunch. Hard to understand the relationship they have with Anna. Not much backstory on that. More than just a black sheep. They seem to resent/hate her. I had a little trouble with that so I guess the character development was good individually but not as a family? Not a lighthearted listen but still really good. Narrator did a fantastic job.
